Christmas Bible Trivia Questions and Answers

Here are 25 questions from the real Christmas story in Matthew and Luke, with the answer and the Bible verse for each. Tap a question to see its answer.

Round 1 is easy, Round 2 is for people who know the story, and Round 3 is true-or-false trick questions that catch almost everyone.

How to play

  1. Split into teams of 3 to 6. Give each team a pen and paper.
  2. Read each question out loud twice. Give teams 30 seconds to write an answer.
  3. One point per correct answer. In Round 3, give a bonus point if a team can say why.
  4. After each round, read the verses out loud. That’s the best part: the game turns into reading the Christmas story together.

Round 3: True or false? (trick questions)

These catch almost everyone, because so much of what we picture comes from Christmas cards, not the Bible.

18.True or false: The Bible says there were three wise men.

False. Matthew mentions three gifts, but never says how many wise men came.

On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2:11
19.True or false: The wise men came to the stable on the night Jesus was born.

False. They found the Child in a house, and Herod’s later order about boys “two years old and under” suggests it was some time later.

On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2:11
20.True or false: The Bible mentions an innkeeper.

False. Luke says there was no room in the inn, but never mentions an innkeeper.

While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6–7
21.True or false: The Bible says Mary rode a donkey to Bethlehem.

False. Luke says Joseph went to Bethlehem with Mary, but doesn’t say how they traveled.

So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.
Luke 2:4–5
22.True or false: The Bible says Jesus was born on December 25.

False. The Bible doesn’t give a date. Christians later chose December 25 as the day to celebrate.

While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6–7
23.True or false: Luke says the angels sang to the shepherds.

Not exactly. Luke says the heavenly host was “praising God and saying,” not singing. Most of us picture singing anyway, and that’s okay.

And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying…
Luke 2:13
24.True or false: A prophet named the town where the Messiah would be born.

True. Micah named Bethlehem hundreds of years earlier, and the religious leaders quoted him to Herod.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel—One whose origins are of old, from the days of eternity.
Micah 5:2
25.True or false: Mary kept quiet and thought about everything that happened.

True. Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
