These verses are short on purpose. Pick one, read it twice, and let it be the last thing on your mind tonight.
If your thoughts keep going after you put the phone down, come back to the same verse rather than reaching for a new one. Repeating one line is calming in a way that scrolling never is.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Safety here doesn’t come from having everything sorted. It comes from God. This is the verse on our free bedside card.
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains me.
Psalm 3 was written while David was running from his own son, Absalom (the psalm’s heading says so). Even then, he slept and woke up again.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.
A picture of sleep without dread. Read the verses around it and you’ll see it grows out of trusting God day by day.
You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day…
Fears feel bigger at night. This psalm names them and says you don’t have to be ruled by them.
In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.
Staying up late and getting up early won’t hold your life together. Sleep is described as a gift God gives to the people he loves.
And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
God said this to Moses, who was carrying a whole nation. Rest is something God gives, not something you earn by finishing everything.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.
The shepherd makes the sheep lie down. Sometimes rest is something you’re led into, not something you have to manage.
In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken.
“Alone” is the key word. When you’ve tried every other way to settle your mind, this is where real rest comes from.
Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.
Talking to yourself, the good way. Remind your own soul tonight: the Lord has been good to you.
For I will refresh the weary soul and replenish all who are weak. At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.
God promises to refresh the weary. Then Jeremiah wakes up from this message of hope and says his sleep had been pleasant.
He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
You don’t have to stay on guard all night. Someone else is awake, and he never gets tired.
Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was engulfed by the waves. But Jesus was sleeping.
Jesus slept through a storm. Trusting his Father let him rest while everyone else panicked.
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”
A good verse to breathe with: in on “Be still,” out on “and know that I am God.” Some Bibles put it “cease striving,” which fits bedtime too.

Three printable verse cards for when you’re afraid, worn out, or can’t sleep: Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 11:28–29 and Psalm 4:8. Keep one by your bed and one in your wallet.
Get 3 free cardsPsalm 4:8 is the classic bedtime verse: “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 3:5 and Proverbs 3:24 are good ones too.
It’s honest about it. Psalm 77:4 says, “You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled to speak.” Psalm 63:6 shows another way to use the night: thinking of God “through the watches of the night.” We gathered more of these on our verses for 3am page.
